I know it's summer here when . . .

. . . our sundeck starts to look like a nursery!

. . . veggie plants are tucked into anything that can hold dirt!

And most exciting,
our 11 year old son has developed an interest in gardening
which opens up so many opportunities to build things and be creative together!

My drawing pens have been temporarily set aside while we prepare our summer vegetable plots and containers. I will do my best to catch up on the challenges soon!

We have one more week of roman numeral challenges (XV)

and then I have another fun series planned for you!

Have fun creating whether you are in your studio or in the garden!

~ I see the ocean, forests, mountains, boats, clouds, plants, sky, kayaks, airplanes, and books.

~ We live by the ocean, we have tiny fish, crabs, starfish and boats on the water. We also have a beautiful view of the mountains and the trees and the sky.

gone fishin'

This past weekend, we signed the kids up for a "learn to fish" class. Who would have thought that two vegetarians would want to try fishing?...and more surprising, that they are fairly good at it!

With a class of eager children stomping on the dock, no fish were caught but they did learn how to properly cast and release the lakeweed that many of them did catch!

The last couple of weeks of summer fun.

Today is a holiday called

BC Day or Provincial Day

so we will be spending the day

visiting with family

from out of town.

The other day I was visiting another familiar face - my other blog.

What's that?...you didn't know that I had another blog?...not to worry, not many do!

I created Creative Themes for Learning and Play just over a year ago to "file" my ideas and our learning experiences. It (or rather I) fizzled out in October but have meant to get back to it to update my records. I am slowly tackling the ominous job of making my ideas, notes, photos, etc. more electronic to take up less space in this forever shrinking home of ours! I will share my updates with you here as I get everything together.

But today I thought I would share a summer post from Creative Themes that I thought you might enjoy ~ a seashell sorting activity that we did with our collection of seashells. We used a printable from Playful Learning and sorted our shells by size and type and made some beautiful mandalas...

...not to mention some wonderful memories too!

a visit to Salt Spring Island

Our annual trip to Salt Spring Island was such a fantastic experience this year. Here's my recount of the day...hope you are ready for lots of photos!... The Market brings together so much local talent: potters, jewellers, soap makers, sewers, knitters, needle felters, glass artists, woodworkers, and painters. As well as the most delicious local food: fresh grown fruits, veggies and flowers, artisan breads, cheeses, gluten free baking and our favourites dehydrated kale chips, seed crackers and sprouted jungle peanuts!

This young entrepreneur was drawing quite a crowd. Using only a magnifying glass he was "solar wood burning" signs onto driftwood. Pretty ingenious if you ask me! We bought one as a souvenier.

The biggest thrill of the day was meeting Raffi in person. He took the time to chat with us for quite a while and truly loves entertaining children with his music. He has a wonderful relaxed and easy going energy. He has just written a book called Lightweb Darkweb which discusses the safety of children and social media. I look forward to reading it.

The Market has a "kids zone" where children can perform or sell their handmade goods as well. These 3 violin players were very popular!

One of the reasons we love Salt Spring so much is that the Arts is such a major part of the culture there. Where else do you find brightly painted pianos on the side of the road open to anyone who wants to sit down and play a tune?! My musical family couldn't resist!

This year we left the Market a bit early for a picnic on top of Mt. Maxwell. It's quite a drive to the top, the road is not well maintained at the end (read: narrow winding road with massive potholes and clouds of dust!) but it's so worth it...
