sunflower painted rocks

On the property that we live there are a few different hands that help with the "weed pulling".  I noticed the other day that we have some sunflower volunteers growing on the edge of the boulevard.  They are still very small and I've been so afraid that a well meaning weeder would accidentally pull them out not knowing that they are sunflowers.

So my daughter and I painted sunflowers on some round stones and placed them at the base of each young plant so everyone is aware what the plant is.  We hope now they will hopefully grow to full size like the parent plant in the first photo!

We used acrylic paint and clear coated them with spray varnish. (I know, highly toxic, does anyone know of something else that will make them weather/waterproof?)

I think next year I'll use this idea to make markers for our vegetables.  Our felt pen written tomato tags usually wear off so we have no idea what kind we're eating. (I definitely won't spray those ones with anything toxic!)

Now that we know that these little plants are safe we'll make sure that they get watered regularly and treated with the same love that all of our other plants get! ;o)

Have you made any plant markers or "garden art" for your garden?  I'd love to see it!
